These Are the 8 Best Books of 2023

I can't think of another novel where the main character's voice is as strong as R.F. Kuang's, making the reader want to consume every word.

1. Yellowface by R.F. Kuang

This year's romance novels have been great, but Kristina Forest's adult debut is extraordinary. Lily's favorite fantasy author responds to her email, starting a nice friendship and hints at romance.

2. The Neighbor Favor by Kristina Forest

One of 2023's best mystery and thriller books, Vanessa Lillie's Blood Sisters is amazing. Syd Walker has forgotten her Oklahoma origins and a horrific night 15 years ago.

3. Blood Sisters by Vanessa Lillie

A book must be special to feel like a diamond after years of reading. Yet All the Fighting Parts merits its place in literature.

4. All the Fighting Parts by Hannah V. Sawyerr

I have never envied an author who builds a fantasy novel's world, especially one as clever and expansive as Moniquill Blackgoose's in To Shape a Dragon's Breath.

5. To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose

From Eliza Touchet, Williams Ainsworth's unconvinced Scottish housekeeper, to Andrew Bogle, a Jamaican plantation boy whose livelihood depends on his stories, the trial has captivated the public.

6. The Fraud by Zadie Smith

He was chosen Barnes & Noble's first Author of the Year and his book Killers of the Flower Moon was recently adapted into a film. His latest works are remarkable. The 18th-century Wager is a compelling tale of truth and survival.

7. The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder by David Grann

It's possible that this book could make every Best Books of 2023 list this year, and I think it could. I keep thinking about Chain-Gang All-Stars, a National Book Award finalist and four-time longlist.

8. Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
